Deacon Jones' Experience

N. P. (cleveland): J. F. Ryder, 1874. 12mo. Item #6379

Single sheet "card" (approx. 4 1/4" x 6 1/2"). Listed under BAL 7276 as a "card" produced subsequent to the leaflet issued by J. F. Ryder of Cleveland in 1874, with the paste-on sheet bearing an illustration by a Mr. Willard and the J. F. Ryder imprint. The present Bret Harte poem has fragments of the paste-on sheet still adhering to the reverse side. A few small edge chips; very good. The Kozlay Sale Catalog of March 18, 1926, indicates the copy of the leaflet printing (Item 99), was probably unique. If so, it must be the Yale University copy today. The "card" printing does not appear in the Kozlay catalog. The poem is not mentioned in Boynton's "Life" nor in the collected "Letters." It is printed on pages 385-387 of "Stories and Poems and Other Uncollected Writings" (1914), without any note of source. It probably had had a previous appearance in a periodical. Housed in an attractive, older cloth covered slipcase with a black leather lettering piece on spine; chemise. BAL 7276.

Price: $1,250.00
