FIRST EDITION in the original monthly parts; 20 parts in 19. Octavo, [i-vii]viii-x[xi]xii-xiv[xv]xvi, [1]2-624, with 39 plates by Phiz and the frontis by Maclise. EXTRA ILLUSTRATED with Proofs on heavy laid paper, of plates 11 and 12 (in part VI), and plates 25 and 26 (in part XIII), laid in (Note: Proof plates are on laid paper .012" thick, while plates in the parts are on wove paper .008" thick). [Together with] A dinner menu from the R.M.S. Edinburgh Castle, dated March 11, 1923 and featuring a colorful drawing of Kate Nickleby, by Will Owen (The R.M.S. Edinburgh Castle was a Union-Castle Line steam ship, in service from 1910 until 1945 between Southampton and Cape Town). Original green printed wrappers; ALL wrappers are correct. All slips, ads and Advertisers are present, as called for in Hatton & Cleaver, with the exception of the following: the Joseph Amesbury ad in part III; the scarce Tyas "Heads of the People" ad in parts VII & VIII; and the Mechi slip in parts VIII. First edition, first issue of the text in part IV, with the misprint "visiter" for "sister" on page 123, line 17 and in part V, with the misprint "latter" for "letter" on page 160, line 6 up. In part III, plate 6 with short closed fore-edge tear repaired, all other plates are very good to fine. In part VIII, plate 16 is 3rd steel. In part XV, plate 29 is First Plate. Tissue guards are in place. First issue of parts I and II, with the publisher's imprint on each plate. Part XIX/XX has the quite scarce "Hill's Seal Wafers" ad, with all 5 seals present. Spines are expertly renewed on most parts. Circulating libaray stamp on margin of front wrapper of part XVII, but this part appears virtually unread. Subscriber name or initials on front wrap of parts V, VIII, XVI and XIX/XX. An exceptional set, internally clean and bright. Armorial bookplate on Chemise. Housed in two turn-of-the-Century full leather, pull-off-top slipcases......and with a pedigree - it is from the famed Hatton & Cleaver collection.
