Volume I of Before Tilsit is second issue without Gottsberger imprint on copyright page, Volume II of Before Tilsit has 1887 date on title page and without the Gottsberger imprint on copyright page (second issue), library bookplate on front pastedown, loss at spine ends, one signature slipping. Volume I of The Invasion is first issue, with the Gottsberger imprint on copyright page; library bookplate on front pastedown and stamp on page 1 of text; inner hinges broken, ffep fore-edge worn. Volume II of The Invasion is first issue with the Gottsberger imprint on the copyright page; library stamp on title page; pocket removed from rear pastedown; abrasion to lower half of front panel. The final two volumes Borodino, volumes I and II are not present here. An important work, which is considered to be one of the best historical novels in world literature today.
