Lyon: Barbier, 1675. Full-Leather. Folio. Very Good. Item #08237

(9 1/2" x 14 3/4") Editio Tertia. Two volumes in one, volume I, i-xxvi[611] plus 1 blank; volume II,1-308[311-458 appendix] 24 (Index), [1] Privilege du Roy (lacks blank before appendix). Full sheep, gilt title on spine; Gassendi (1592-1655) is known as the "father of modern atomic theory" and in this work he uses the ideas of Epicurus as a starting point to explore and demonstrate the atomic nature of matter. The work concludes with appendices including the Syntagma, essays on money, the motion of planets and falling objects and the diet of animals. Endpapers with offsetting from an old cloth jacket, a few leaves with small wormholes, some light marginal dampstains, occasional browning and foxing to text; 2" loss of leather at spine ends, corners worn. Only one copy shows in the auction record. Very good.
