Philadelphia: Matthew Carey, 1794. Second American Edition. Hard Cover. Item #7741
A brilliant copy; 336 pages, plus folding map and folding chart of Indian Tribes. Beautifully bound in early 20th Century 3/4 brown leather over marbled boards. The Second American Edition of Jefferson's great work and the first to contain a map. The folding map shows Virginia in great detail and was produced by Samuel Lewis. The text, printed on laid paper, is simply brilliant; the folding map is printed on heavy paper. The Appendix includes Charles Thompson's notes on the original text as well as "Draught of a Fundamental Constitution for the Commonwealth of Virginia" and "An Act for Establishing Religious Freedom." A nearly fine example of Thomas Jefferson's great work. Howes J78.
