New York: Charles L. Webster, 1885. Salesman's Dummy. Cloth. Item #7592
A salesman's prospectus/dummy for Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Original green cloth, half-title with Kemble illustration on verso, portrait bust heliotype after Gephardt, title page, notice, explanatory, contents, list of illustrations and 39 leaves of text, with numerous illustrations after Kemble, 2 page advertisment for the present title, and subscriber's blanks at rear. Publisher's green cloth, covers stamped in gilt and black, spine design stamped on rear cover; peach endpapers. A rare example of the salesman's dummy for Twain's greatest work - only 2 copies are in the auction record. The title page and page 283 are integral; in the list of illustrations the one captioned "Him and another Man" is incorrectly listed on page 88 (first state). Older repair at spine ends, tips worn through. The two samples of spines of alternate leather bindings are absent from front pastedown. The text is very good.
