Mansfield Merriman (1848-1925) was appointed County Surveyor in 1867, entered the Sheffield Scientific School in 1868 and graduated in 1871, with a degree of Bachelor of Philosophy. He received his PhD at Yale in 1876 and went on to teach Civil Engineering and Astronomy there.
