Unbound. 4to. Item #3088
258 typed pages (one side) with added text and corrections by the author throughout, often times, an entire page in manuscript. The story was originally titled "THE CLUE OF THE SMOKED CHIMNEY" and was later changed for publication to "THE CASE OF THE SMOKING CHIMNEY" [together with] a fine copy of "THE CASE OF THE SMOKING CHIMNEY" , New York, William Morrow and Co. 1943 (first edition), bound in gray cloth lettered in red, in chipped and worn pictorial dust jacket. Both the typescript and book presented in a custom made 1/2 morocco clamshell which presents the book on one side and the manuscript on the other. A unique presentation. Long before Gardner died, he arranged for his manuscripts and books to be donated to the University of Texas, in Austin. They have 140 manuscripts in their collection and we have seen none coming to market; therefore, one must conclude that very few, if any others are privately held.
