GRAHAM GREENE

Graham Greene was an editor, essayist, playwright and novelist. He  was also one of the most popular and critically acclaimed authors of the 20th century. A British writer whose work had both popular and critical appeal. By his own claim, Greene wrote for both "entertainments" and "serious novels," many of them political thrillers.

ONE OF "A FEW COPIES"

Greene, Graham. STAMBOUL TRAIN. London, 1932; William Heineman. First edition, first issue, a proof copy in orange wraps. Pages 77, 78, 82, 98, and 131 have references to Q.C. Savory, anoblique reference to J.B. Priestley. Octavo [x], 307, [1] pp. (Wobbe, p. 17): "Greene also relates a conversation with Charles Evans concerning J.B. Priestley's threat of a libel action if certain lines in the then undistributed book were not changed. At that time, 13,000 copies had already been printed and bound, and altered pages had to be substituted. Priestley had seen a review copy when he demanded the changes, and so it is possible that a few copies without the alterations mentioned in "A SORT OF LIFE" may still exist." The present copy is such a copy. "Q.B. Savory" was changed to "Quin Savory" and "Dickens" was changed to "Chaucer."
